Synopsis:

Christian Forteski is a divorced father and businessman, completely foreign to

violence and recklessness. When his orderly life is interrupted by the suspicious death

of his daughter, Jesse, a troubled teenage runaway, Christian spirals into despair.

The police conclude the cause of death to be drug related, but when Christian is sent a

horrific pornographic video of Jesse, he sets out to find answers. Following the links

through the industry, Christian works his way to the seemingly guilty parties,

torturing them to reveal the next victim in his quest for vengeance. But as the ugly

truth of Jesse’s death unfolds, Christian begins to question the validity of his actions.

On his way to north Queensland, to finish his undertaking, Christian meets Alice, a

teenage hitchhiker, not unlike his daughter. He reluctantly agrees to take her with him

and a fragile friendship begins to unfold as they discover that you can be more honest

to a complete stranger than anyone you will ever know. Yet as the solitude of their

journey seems to ease, a dark threat lingers nearby.

Production Notes:

Writer/director Steven Kastrissios adapted an award winning short film from the confronting feature screenplay and with these strengths, signed on a stellar cast, led by Peter Marshall.

With its polished big-budget look & sound, it’s hard to believe The Horseman was made on such a modest budget, demonstrating just what is possible when a dedicated team works together for an independent Australian film. Kastrissios filled out many other roles including producer, editor and digital colourist with post-production being largely completed on his home computer.

The production featured a young, talented crew who were looking for their breakthrough roles and slaved towards a smooth production that was aided by securing industry veterans in key roles, such as multi-award winning cinematographer, Mark Broadbent and stunt coordinator Chris Anderson (King Kong, Mad Max), who ensured the elaborate fight scenes designed by the first-time director would translate effectively.

Rebecca Dakin also came aboard to help produce, serving a multitude of tasks

including unit manager, production accountant and even caterer. Together the team hit

the ground running, tackling everything from intricate drama to multi-camera set-pieces to complete a successful production in just four weeks.
